335 Grief and Loss

grief deep mental and emotional anguish that is a response to the subjective experience of the loss of something significant
grief subjective state that accompanies mourning; essential for health, there is no correct way

delayed grief remains fixed in the denial stage, may be triggered much later in response
distorted (exaggerated) grief individual becomes incapable of managing activities of daily living, fixed in the anger stage
normal vs maladaptive grief loss of self esteem precipitates depression
age 3 to 5 children and death believe death is reversible, difficulty distinguishing between fantasy and reality
age 10 to 12 death death is final and that it affects everyone
normal grief resolves 6 to 8 weeks
anticipatory grief can become more intense as the expected loss draws near, acts as a defense for some individuals to ease the burden of loss
