335 Grief and Loss

anticipatory loss | when a loss is coming |
perceived loss | felt by an individual but cannot be verified as a loss from outside (self esteem or control) |
disenfranchised grief | cannot express loss to others, ambiguous loss |
complicated grief | multiple losses, debilitating |
normal presentation of grief | sadness and anxiety, anger, sleep disturbance, difficulty concentrating |
delayed grief | remains fixed in the denial stage, may be triggered much later in response |
distorted (exaggerated) grief | individual becomes incapable of managing activities of daily living, fixed in the anger stage |
normal vs maladaptive grief | loss of self esteem precipitates depression |
age 3 to 5 children and death | believe death is reversible, difficulty distinguishing between fantasy and reality |
age 10 to 12 death | death is final and that it affects everyone |
normal grief resolves | 6 to 8 weeks |
anticipatory grief | can become more intense as the expected loss draws near, acts as a defense for some individuals to ease the burden of loss |
