SKELETAL - SKULL

TermDefinition
22 bones compose this and they are all interlocked except the lower jaw (mandible) the skull
Cranium has 8 bones, covers/protects brain
facial skeleton has 14 bones, forms shape of face
mandible lower jaw, held in place via ligaments
orbit eye, formed by some cranial bones and some facial bones
paranasal sinuses air filled cavities, formed by some cranial and facial bones, reduces weight and helps change voice
Frontal bone in cranium, forms forehead, roof of nasal cavity, roofs of eye orbits. contains frontal sinuses and supraorbital foramen/notch
where is the supraorbital foramen located right above your eye but under your eyebrow
foramen = ______ and fossa = _________ foramen = opening , fossa = cavity
Parietal Bone - location, how many, what are the sutures? side/roof of cranium (top back of head). 2 bones, a sagittal suture (joins the 2 parietal bones) and coronal suture (parietal to frontal)
What does the sagittal suture connect? the 2 parietal bones
What does the coronal suture connect? the 2 parietal bones to the frontal bone
Occipital Bone - location, how many, what's in it, suture? back of skull, 1 bone, OCCIPITAL CONDYLES form joint with C1, lambdoid suture connects occipital to parietal bone
Occipital Condyle forms joint with C1 (1st vertebrae) located in occipital bone
What does the lambdoid suture connect? the occipital (bottom back of head) bone to parietal (top back of head) bone
Temporal Bones - location, how many, what's in it, suture? temples, 2 bones, external acoustic meatus, mandibular fossa, mastoid process, styloid process, zygomatic process, squamous suture
What does the squamous suture connects? connects the temporal bone to the parietal bone
TEMPORAL BONE : external acoustic meatus hole into ear
TEMPORAL BONE : mandibular fossa connects with mandibular condyles
TEMPORAL BONE : mastoid process muscle attachment site (behind ear and downwards)
TEMPORAL BONE : styloid process muscle attachment site (pointy structure inside head)
TEMPORAL BONE : zygomatic process helps for cheek prominence (area) and zygomatic arch
Sphenoid bone forms base of cranium sides of skull, sides of eye orbits. contains sphenoid sinuses
SPHENOID BONE : sphenoid sinuses are located where? located top of nose, where you would hold a nose bleed
Ethmoid bone separates nasal passages and brain, contains the cribriform plate, perpendicular plate, superior/middle nasal conchae, ethmoidal sinuses, cristal galli
ETHMOID BONE : cribriform plate contains openings for axons of SMELL neurons
ETHMOID BONE : perpendicular plate main portion of nasal septum (beneath nose in skull)
ETHMOID BONE : superior/middle nasal conchae support mucous membranes of nasal cavity
ETHMOID BONE : ethmoidal sinuses a bunch of ethmodial air cells
ETHMOID BONE : cristal falli holds membranes that enclose the brain
