TermDefinition
Macromolecules Molecules that combine with other atoms and molecules to form larger and more complex chemicals.
Mitochondria The “powerhouses” of cells that provide energy needed by the cell to carry on day-to-day functioning, growth, and repair
Organelle A structure made of molecules organized in such a way that it can perform a specific function.
Isotopes An element containing the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons
Acid Any substance that will release a hydrogen ion (H) when in solution.
Cytoplasm The inside of the cell composed largely of a gel-like substance and made of various organelles and molecules suspended in a watery fluid called cytosol, or sometimes intracellular fluid.
Endoplasmic Reticulum ER A small network located deep inside the cytoplasm
Flagella Single, long structures in the only type of human cell that has this feature: the human sperm cell
Gap Junction Form when membrane channels of adjacent plasma membranes connect to each other
Epithelial Tissue One or more layers of densely arranged cells with very little extracellular matrix May form either sheets or glands
Mucous Membrane Epithelial membranes that line body surfaces opening directly to the exterior.
