Explain the purpose of medical terminilogy: Understanding medical terminology is essential in healthcare and for being a first responder. This helps to communicate efficiently and effectively.
Identify the four components that comprise a medical term: Word root - the foundation of the word Prefix - what occurs before the root word Suffix - what occurs after the root word Combining vowels - vowels that join one or more word roots to other components of a term.
Anterior: Anterior (ventral) - the front surface of the body; the side facing you in the standard anatomic position.
Posterior: Posterior (dorsal) - the back surface of the body; the side away from you in the standard anatomic position.
Right: Right - patient's right
Left: Left: patient's left
Superior: Superior - above a body part or nearer to the hand.
Inferior: Inferior - below a body part or nearer to the feet.
Proximal: Proximal - closer to the trunk
Distal: Distal - further from the trunk or nearer to the free end of the extremity.
Medial: Medial - parts of the body that lie closer to the midline; also called inner structures.
Lateral: Lateral - parts of the body that lie farther from the midline; also called outer structures.
Superficial: Superficial - closer to or on the skin.
Deep: Deep - farther inside the body and away from the skin.
Prone: Prone - lying face down.
Supine: Supine - lying face up.
Fowler's: Fowler - An inclined position in which the head of the bed is raised. 90-degree angle.
Semi-Fowler's: Semi-Fowler - reclining position with the head elevated to help them breathe easier and to control the airway. 45-degree angle.
Break down the meaning of a medical term based on the components of the term: Nephropathy nephr/o/pathy -pathy (suffix meaning "disease") o (combining form) nephr (word root meaning "kidney") Nephropathy = disease of the kidney
Identify error-prone medical abbreviations, acronyms, and symbols: Error-prone medical abbreviations - use only commonly understood acronyms and abbreviations to minimize misinterpretations and errors. Acronyms - are pronounced as their own word. Symbols - it is important to use only the symbols that are understood.
Interpret selected medical abbreviations, acronyms, and symbols: Medical abbreviations - take the place of words to shorten notes or documentation. Acronyms - you are shortening several words, usually using the first letter of each work to make the acronym. Symbols - used as a shortcut in communication and 4 document
