TermDefinition
Independent Reading This term means students are independently reading material that closely aligns with their individual interests and skill sets and are able to effectively and incrementally apply all of our strategies over a sustained period of time.
Active Reading This term means the active use of strategies that enable students to make meaning while unpacking various genres and text passages. This process helps deepen engagement, build comprehension and increase reading stamina.
Just Right Book This term is used to describe books that are appropriate for the individual reader based upon individual interests, reading history and skill set. Just Right Books are particular to the individual reader.
Easy Book This term is used to describe books that present no challenge to a reader and are considered too easy based upon the reader's personal reading history and individual skill set.
Challenging Book This term is used to describe books that are too difficult for the reader to understand. It may have complex parts, long complicated sentences, unfamiliar vocabulary and/or terms, small type font and many pages, all of which make reading tedious, impede comprehension and can lead to readers frustration rather than enjoyement.
Annotate This term means to use symbols and comments to expose a reader's active application of reading strategies and make their internal processes more transparent.
Jot This term means to quickly write down any thoughts triggered by your active engagement with the text.
Gist This term means to write a short summary about the main points of a section of text (paragraph/page).
Genre This term means the category or sub-category of books or texts.
Reading Strategies This term refers to the techniques used by readers to deepen engagement, build comprehension and develop reading stamina.
Realistic Fiction Fiction that takes place in contemporary or present time and could be true.
Historical Fiction Fiction that takes place in a different historical time period, includes historically accurate details and facts, and could actually be true.
Adventure Fiction This type of fiction usually presents danger or gives the reader a sense of excitement.
Suspense/ Thriller Fiction This type of fiction focuses around suspense, dread or fear of a future crime that might happen.
Humorous Fiction This type of fiction is made of funny events or scenes designed to make the reader laugh.
Sci- Fiction This genre is fiction and includes science and technology. The science. This may include space exploration, chemistry, and physics with a blend of futuristic societies
Graphic Novels This genre could be fiction or non fiction. This format is written in comic book style.
Poetry This form of literature is written to share ideas, express emotion, and create imagery, often through rhythm and rhyme,
Mystery This fiction genre focuses on an event that has suspense or a crime that has taken place. There are a series of clues that lead the reader into solving the crime. Often, there will be a detective or wise person and suspects involved to determine “Whodunit?”
Fantasy This type of fiction involves magical or make believe elements.
Biography This genre is non-fiction. It traces the important events of someone’s life story, but is written by someone other than the person being featured.
Autobiography This genre is non-fiction. It shares the important events of someone’s life and is written by that person.
Memoir This genre is nonfiction. It is a narrative written from the author’s view. It focuses on a specific part of a person’s life.
How-to Books This genre is nonfiction. It explains how to make, use, repair, or accomplish something.
Informational Books This genre is non-fiction. It is text that gives you facts about a subject (ex. insects).
News Articles This genre is nonfiction. It is made to educate readers on current events.
