7-PS1-1 (Matter)

Atomic Structure & Matter

TermDefinition
atom The smallest unit of an element that makes up all matter.
nucleus The center of an atom made up of protons and neutrons.
electron The negatively charged subatomic particle of an atom found outside the nucleus.
proton The positively charged subatomic particle of an atom.
neutron The neutral (0) charged subatomic particle of an atom.
element A pure substance made up of one kind of atom. It can’t be changed into simpler substances.
compound A pure substance made up of two or more different atoms that are chemically combined.
molecule The smallest unit of a compound made up of two or more atoms that are chemically combined.
monatomic molecule A molecule composed of only one atom or element. They include atoms/elements that belong to noble gases.
diatomic molecule Molecules that are composed of only two of the same atom or element. These atoms/elements are both nonmetals.
extended structures Are created by ionic compounds that join to form large repeated patterns or chains of molecules.
crystals Solid structures whose atoms are arranged in a regular grid pattern.
matter Any substance that has mass and takes up space.
pure substance A substance made up of only one type of atom (element) or two or more different kinds of atoms (compounds).
Homogeneous mixture Type of mixture that is uniformly “evenly” mixed. Is also known as a solution.
Heterogeneous mixture Type of mixture that is not uniformly “not evenly” mixed.
solution A mixture in which one substance is dissolved in another. It also contains a solvent and at least one solute.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
