Integumentary System - Skin

TermDefinition
What determines hair color? Genes & the direct type and amount of pigment in its cells
Types of membranes? Epithelial, Mucous, and Synovial
Skin? Is composed of epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous layer/hypodermis
Stratum corneum? Outermost layer made of dead cells that are filled with keratin
Keratin? Makes the skin tough and helps to waterproof the skin
Melanin? A pigment that gives the skin its color
Melanin functions? Protects skin from ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
Melanocytes? Produce melanin
What's in the dermis? Composed of irregular dense connective tissue
Meissner's corpuscles? Sensory receptors for light touch

Pimple care? Washing your face, prescription drugs, noncomedogenic, & dermatologist
Types of skin cancer? Basal cell carcinoma, Squamous cell carcinoma, & Malignant melanoma
ABCD? Asymmetry, Border, Color, & Diameter
Arrector pili muscle? Goosebumps
Types of hair? Vellus, Terminal, & Intermediate
What causes hair loss? Drugs, diet, radiation, high fever, stress, and hormonal factors related to pregnancy
Nails? Protective covers on the ends of fingers and toes
Nail bed? Lunula, from where nails grow
Sebum? Oily substance that helps keep skin and hair soft and waterproof
Eccrine? Sweat type - Forehead, neck, back, palms, and the soles of the feet
Skin glands? Sweat and sebaceous glands
SPF? Sun protection factor
What causes sweat to smell? The breakdown of sweat producing bacteria
Skin functions? Protection, Excretion, Regulation of body temp, Cutaneous sensation, Vitamin D synthesis, Blood reservoir, & immunity
Functions of subcutaneous layer? Stores energy, protects organs, and provides insulation
Stretch marks? When the dermis is distorted past its elastic capabilities and doesn't snap back
Eczema? Non contagious skin rash often accompanied by itching, blistering, and scaling
Herpes? Viral skin disease characterized by clusters of small blister-like vesicles
Mole? Fleshy skin tumor that is usually pigmented
Pediculosis? Disease produced by an infestation of lice
Scabies? Disease resulting from an infestation of mites
Seborrhea? Hyperactivity of sebaceous glands accompanied by greasy skin and dandruff
Ulcer? Open sores
Urticaria/Hives? Allergic reaction of the skin that produces reddish, elevated patches
Wart? Flesh-colored, raised area caused by a viral infection
What does the dermis contain? Muscle fibers, blood vessels, nerve fibers, accessory organs, collagen, elastin, and reticular fibers
Signs of hypothermia? Shivering, mental confusion, lethargy, loss of reflexes and consciousness, and eventually major organ failure
Apocrine? Sweat type - Axillary regions, groin, and around the nipples
