Chapter 3 Objectives
Term | Definition |

Consent | permissions to give care (required right every patient of decision making capacity has) |
Express Consent | Pt acknowledges they want care or transport |
Implied Consent | - Pt is unconscious - Pt is not in decision making capacity |
Involuntary Consent | - Pt is mentally ill, having a behavioral crisis, or developmentally delayed - Get consent from gradian or equivalent |
Consent, Treatment, and Transport for Minors | - Guardian gives consent for minor - Can assume consent if no guardians can be reached |
Forcible Restraint | - Pt who is combative but needs medical treatment/transport - Consult Med Control for authorization - |
Transport/Treatment Refusal | - Adults who are have decision making capacity can refuse/stop at anytime no matter what - If not in Decision making capacity Pt cannot refuse - Before leaving a refusal encourage to call if mind changes or things get worse |
Pt Communications, Confidentiality, and HIPAA | - Confidentiality remains between Pt and EMT - Confidentiality includes: history, findings, and provided treatment - A slip of the lippa violates HIPAA |
DNR | - Do Not attempt Resuscitation - Does not mean do not treat - other advanced directives would be a Living Will and Health care Directive |
Signs of Death | Physical: - Unresponsive to painful Stimuli - No pulse/ heartbeat - No signs of breathing -No reflexes - No blood pressure - Low temp Definitave: - Decapitation - Rigor Mortis (2-12 hours after death) Putrefaction(decomposition) |
Organ Donors | -Express wish to donate organs - Consent through ID/ donor card -Treat as same |
Medical ID Devices | - Signifies DNR, Allergies, or serious med condition - via bracelet, necklace, card, or keychain |
Negligence | Failure to provide the same care that a person with similar training would |
Abandonment | Termination of care without the Pts consent and without provisions to continue care by professional who has equal or higher training |
Assault and Battery | Assault: Unlawfully placing a person in fear of bodily harm Battery: Unlawfully touching a person |
Kidnapping | Seizing, confining, abducting, carrying away by force |
Special Situation Reports | Abuse Injury during a felony Drug injuries Childbirth Suicide Animal bites Some communicable diseases sexual assault Restrained Pt transport Crime scene Dead |
