Unit 3 and 4
lewis dot structures, covalent and ionic bonds, and naming
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Chemical Formula | a symbolic representation of its chemical composition |
Lewis Dot Structure | a very simplified representation of the valence shell electrons in a molecule using chemical symbols, dots, lines, and arrows |
Octet Rule | the tendency of atoms to prefer to have eight electrons in the valence shell |
Ionic Bond | bond between metal and nonmetal |
Covalent Bond | bond between nonmetal and nonmetal |
Electronegativity | the tendency of an atom to attract an electron; the higher it is the 'greedier' the atom. |
Oxidation Number | the ionic charge of a compound or atom |
Valence Electrons | the electrons in the outermost ring of an atom |
Cations | positively charged ions |
Anions | negatively charged ions |
Ion | an atom that has lost or gained electrons and therefore has an electric charge (positive or negative) |
Polyatomic Ion | An ion that is composed of more than one type of atom |
