Unit 3 Reading Glossary

antonym a word that has an opposite meaning
assumption an opinion stated as a fact but without proof
autobiography nonfiction about the writer's own life
biography nonfiction about another person's life
comparing pointing out similarities between things
conclusion a judgement you make by combining information in a text with information you already know
contrasting pointing out the differences between things
editorial nonfiction with a point of view that tries to persuade
emotional appeals persuasive attempts built upon feelings
essay nonfiction that explores a topic in depth
explicit spelled out in words
fact true information that can be verified
generalization a broad statement or idea
homograph a word that is spelled the same as another but has a different meaning
inference an educated guess about something not directly stated by an author
logical appeals reasons supported by evidence
main idea the central idea of the paragraph or text
main topic the subject of a piece of nonfiction writing
memoir nonfiction about a specific time in the writer's life
nonfiction writing that is based on facts
observation a fact the author personally experiences to be true
opinion a statement of an author's own beliefs
paraphrase a rewording of a passage to clarify meaning
point of view an author's attitude about the subject
prefix a short element that comes at the beginning of a word
purpose a reason for writing
root the main part of a word
suffix an element added to the end of a word
summary a brief statement or restatement of main points
synonym a word that has the same meaning as another word
verbal context the words around an unknown word that provide clues to its meaning
