Reading Poetry

Unit 2 Reading Glossary

TermDefinition
alliteration the repetition of the same consonant sound, usually at the beginning of a word
figurative language language that makes a comparison beyond its literal meaning
free verse a form of poetry with no set rules for rhythm or rhyme
hyperbole a figure of speech that uses exaggeration for effect
iambic pentameter a form of poetry with five sets of one unstressed syllable in each line
metaphor a comparison of two unlike things without a connecting word
meter a unit of rhythm in poetry
onomatopoeia a word that imitates or suggests the sound of the word itself
personification a literary device that gives human qualities to inanimate objects and animals
rhyme the repetition of a vowel sound or syllable
rhyme scheme the pattern of rhyme in a poem
rhythm the pattern of sounds in a poem
simile a comparison of two unlike things joined with a connecting word such as like, as, than, or resembles
stanza a unit of writing in poetry made up of multiple lines
symbol something that represents something other than its literal meaning
theme the lesson of the poem; the author's message to the reader
