Unit 1 Reading Glossary

TermDefinition
character a person portrayed in a story
characterization how an author develops the characters in a story
climax the turning point of a story
conclusion a judgement you make by combining information in text with information you already know
conflict the main problem or struggle in a story
connotation the interpretation of a word beyond its literal definition
context the words and sentences surrounding a word
deduction a logical guess based upon facts
denotation a word's literal meaning or dictionary definition
dynamic character a character who experiences change during a story
exposition the basic situation introduced at the beginning of a story
external conflict a problem in a story that occurs between the main character and an outside force
falling action the part of the plot after the climax
figurative language language that makes a comparison beyond its literal meaning
first-person narrator a narrator who tells the story from his or her own perspective and is usually a character in a story
foreshadowing hints about events that will occur late in the story
hyperbole an exaggerated statement
inference an educated guess about things not stated directly by an author
internal conflict a problem in a story that occurs within the main character
main character the central character in a story who faces a conflict that drives the plot; the protagonist
metaphor a comparison of two unlike things that does not use a connecting word
minor change a character who is not the protagonist; a supporting character
mood the atmosphere of a piece of fiction, or the feeling it gives readers
narrator the voice of the person telling a fictional story
onomatopoeia words that imitate or suggest the sound they describe
personification the attribution of human qualities to objects, natural elements, animals, or ideas
plot the series of related events in a story
point of view the perspective from which a story is told
resolution the final part of a story; the conclusion
rising action the part of the plot in which characters take action to resolve conflicts
simile a comparison of two unlike things using a connecting word, such as like or as
static character a character who does not experience a significant change during a story
theme the writer's interpretation of the story's meaning
third-person limited a narrator who is not a character in a story and can only describe the thoughts and feelings of one character
third person narrator an unnamed narrator who is not a character in the story
third person omniscient a narrator who is not a character in the story and who can describe the thoughts and feelings of multiple characters
tone the author's feelings about a subject
