Unit 2 Concept 1 Atomic Theory and Structure
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Differentiate between the plum model and the nuclear model. | plum pudding model = a positive sphere with ramdomly placed electrons throught it. No empty space. Nuclear model = a tiny nucleus with electrons all round it. Lots of empty space |
Differentiate between the Bohr model and the electron cloud model. | Bohr = is a nucleus with rings of electrons round them. electron cloud = a nucleus electrons moving all round |
Describe the forces that holds the atom together. | Electromagnetic Force holds the nucleus and the electrons together. Strong nucleur force holds the nucleus together. |
Atom | The smallest unit of an element that still has the properties of that element |
Proton | positive particle in the nucleus. It holds the identity of the atom |
Neutron | neutral particle in the nucleus with protons. protons and neutrons make up the mass of the atom |
Electron | negative particle outside of the nucleus in the electron cloud |
Valance electrons | the outermost energy level (has the most energy) |
