Unit 6 - Lesson 17
1)What was the main way of life for people in Ancient Greece? Most people were sea traders because the terrain made land trade very difficult.
2)What civilizations influenced Ancient Greece? The Minoans and Mycenaeans.
3)What were most of the Greek islands covered with? They were covered in rugged mountain chains.
4)What is the reason for the Trojan War according to legend? The legend goes that the Trojan prince kidnapped the beautiful wife of a Greek king.
5)What happened during the Dorian Age? There was a loss of education, writing, and art.
Unit 6 - Lesson 18
1)What were the government styles that Ancient Greece experimented with? Democracy, oligarchy, tyranny, and monarchy.
2)What form of government did Sparta and Athens have? An oligarchy and a direct democracy.
3)What kind of government is it when people vote on something, whether representatives or everyone votes for laws themselves? That is called a direct or representative democracy.
4)Was Greece considered a united country by the Greeks? No, every city-state had different laws, government, army, and currency.
5)Who were the advisors of the King? He had a council of aristocrats, but they overthrew the kings to form and oligarchy.
Unit 6 - Lesson 19
1)What were the rights for women in Sparta? Women didn't have many rights, but they ran the businesses while their husbands were at war.
2)What were the rights for women in Athens? Women were not considered citizens. They could not vote and had very few freedoms.
3)What was education like in Athens? Education was based on learning, writing, reading, and culture.
4)What was Spartan education like? Education was based on military strength and preparedness.
5)How did Spartan economy function? Sparta's economy relied on farming and on conquests of other people.
Unit 6 - Lesson 20
1)Who was the leader of Athens during the Golden age? Pericles was the leader during that time.
2)What were 4 main achievements during the Golden Age? Philosophy, drama, government, architecture
3)How many gods were held significance and what were they called? The 12 gods were called the Olympian gods.
4)Who was one of the most influential philosophers in history? Socrates was one of Greece's most famous philosophers.
5)Why were wars called off every four years? Athletes needed to be able to travel safely to the Olympic games.
Unit 6 - Lesson 21
1)Who is known as "the father of medicine"? Hippocrates brought a scientific way of thinking to his profession as a doctor.
2)Who is known as "the father of history"? Herodotus wrote a history of the wars between the Greeks and the Persians.
3)Who suggested that the Earth revolved around the sun? Aristarchus was the first person to suggest this.
4)What did Ptolemy invent? He invented latitude and longitude.
5)Where can you still see Greek architecture? The U.S. Capitol and Supreme Court have elements of Greek architecture, such as columns and pediments.
