Sleep and Consciousness

States of Unconsciousness are? Spontaneously, physiological, and psychologically
States of Unconsciousness: spontaneously Daydreaming and drowsiness, flow, and dreaming
States of Unconsciousness: physiological Hallucinations, orgasm, food and oxygen starvation
States of Unconsciousness: psychologically Sensory deprivation, hypnosis, mediation
Dual Processing Info is often simultaneously processed on separate conscious/unconscious tracks
Parallel Processing Processing multiple aspects of a stimulus/problem simutaneouslt
Sequential Processing Processing one aspect of stimulus/problem at a time. Used for new info
Circadian Rythym Biological clock, regular bodily rhythms that occur on 24 hour cycle
REM Sleep Rapid eye movement sleep, reoccurring sleep stage with vivid dreams, muscles are relaxed but other body systems are active
N1 Sleep Hallucinations, fleeting images
N2 Sleep Sleep spindles, aid memory processing
N3 Sleep Deep sleep, delta waves
Why do we sleep? P,R,R,RM,CT,G To protect, recuperate, restore and rebuild memories, creative thinking, and growth
What does sleep deprivation affect? H,M,BR/H,S,G,T Hormones, metabolism, and brain response to hunger and stress and genes and temptation
What are the six sleep disorders? I,N,SA,SW,ST,NT Insomnia, narcolepsy, sleep apnea, sleep walking, sleep talking, night terrors
Insomnia Reoccurring problems in falling or staying asleep
Narcolepsy Uncontrolled sleep attacks, make lapse to REM sleep
Sleep Apnea Temporary cessations of breathing during sleep and momentary awakenings
Night Terrors Not remembered, N3 Sleep
What two things increase problem of insomnia? Sleeping pills and alcohol
How many dreams are marked by at least one negative event? 8/10
Why do we dream? W,M,D/P NP, NS, RCD Satisfy our wishes, file away memories, develop and preserve neural pathways, and make sense of neural static, reflect cognitive development
