What is nursing as a discipline? - branch of education - academe / knowledge - increases the quality of education by applying theory into practice
What is nursing as a profession? - specialized field of practice - accompanying practice abilities - found on theoretical structure of knowledge
What is syntax in nursing? medical language and medical terms
Characteristics of Nursing as a DISCIPLINE: (1-3) 1. A distinct perspective and syntax. 2. Determination of what phenomena are of interest. 3. Determination of the context in which the phenomena are viewed.
Characteristics of Nursing as a DISCIPLINE: (4-6) 4. Determination of what questions to ask. 5. Determination of what methods of study to be used. 6. Determination of evidence or proof.

What is the difference between Rationalism and Empiricism? rationalism is the knowledge that is derived from reason and logic (deductive) while on the other hand empiricism is the knowledge that is derived from experience and experimentation (inductive)
- The senses are the reason of all knowledge - Mind is a “tabula rasa” (or “clean slate”) - Biology is a model for knowledge - Knowledge is only gained a posteriori (inductive method) Empiricism
- Reason is the source of all knowledge. - Mind contains innate ideas - Math is a model for knowledge - Knowledge can be gained priori (deductive logic) - Knowledge can be certain - Senses are easily fooled - Uses theory-then-research strategy Rationalism
