How does Jonas feel about the upcoming Ceremony of Twelve? Apprehensive. He worries that he will not get an assignment he will like.
What is Father's job? What does he do? Nurturer. He is responsible for all the physical and emotional needs of every newchild during its earliest life.
What is Mother's job? What does she do? She works at the Department of Justice. She punishes citizens who break the community's rules.
What is the name of the baby that Father will bring home? Gabriel / Gabe
Who is the most important Elder? The Receiver
Why is it very hard for a rule to be changed in this community? The rule is sent to the committee of elders for study, if they cannot decide it goes to the Receiver. The committee would rather not bother The Receiver.
What ceremony is the last in this community? What happens at this ceremony? Ceremony of Twelve. The Twelves receive their job assignments.
What is Lily's comfort object? Jonas's? A stuffed elephant. A stuffed bear.
What makes up a "family unit"? A father, mother, boy child & girl child; only four people allowed
What happens if a community member commits a third transgression? They are released from the community.
What does it mean to be "released" from the community? The "released" cannot return to the community ever.
What are the 3 reasons for release? Newchildren are released for not developing properly; Elderly people are released in a celebration of their lives; Repeat offenders are released as punishment after the third transgression.
Who can be "released"? Newchilden, elderly & repeat rule breakers
How old do you have to be to own a bicycle? 9
How many newchildren receive a family in each Ceremony of One? 50
At the beginning of the book, what was it that frightened Jonas? a jet
