Chemistry Chpt 13

The Particle Theory

Matter Matter is anything that occupies space and has a mass.
What are the three states of matter? Solid, liquid, gas
Particle A minute portion of matter.
Arrangements of Particles Particles in a substance stay the same; what changes is the arrangement of the particles and their energy.
Properties of Solids The particles in a solid are closely packed together. They can vibrate but do not move from their position.
Properties of Liquids The particles in liquids are close to each other but are free to move past each other. They tend to stick together though.
Properties of Gases In gases, the particles are free to move in all directions.
Solids Summarised Definite shape, definite volume, cannot be compressed and cannot flow freely.
Liquids Summarised No definite shape, definite volume, cannot be compressed and can flow freely.
Gases Summarised No definite shape, no definite volume, can be compressed, can flow freely.
Change of State This is where material can change from one state of matter to another. There is no change in mass and no new substance is formed.
Melting When a solid is heated and it turns into a liquid. ( ice>water)
Boiling When a liquid is heated and it turns to gas. (water>water vapor/steam)
Condensation When a gas is cooled and it changes to a liquid. (water vapor> water)
Freezing When a liquid is cooled and it turns to a solid. (water>ice)
Diffusion The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
