Matter - properties/classification of matter
Term | Definition |
---|---|
chemical change | alters the composition of original matter AKA. creates a new substance; Atoms in compounds are rearranged to make new and different compounds |
physical change | does NOT alter the composition of original matter or create a new substance |
intensive physical change | A physical property that will be the same regardless of the amount of matter. (If I add more matter, this property will NOT change) |
extensive physical change | A physical property that will change if the amount of matter changes. (If I add more matter, this property will change) |
elements | one TYPE of atom – can be 1, 2, 3 atoms of the SAME element in a molecule to count as an element |
compounds | two or more elements chemically combine (bonded) |
pure substances | elements or compounds; boiling/melting/freezing points are CONSTANT – no residue left over |
mixtures | 2 or more elements OR compounds are combined physically |
homogeneous mixture | same – uniform composition, cannot tell the different parts of the mixture easily |
heterogeneous mixture | different – not uniform composition, can see the different parts of the mixture easily |
gas | molecules far apart, high energy and movement; no definite shape or volume; it does compress |
liquid | molecules close together as they slide; medium energy and movement; no definite shape, √ definite volume; it does compress |
solid | molecules close together, vibrating; low energy and movement; √definite shape, √definite volume; does NOT compress |
Physical or Chemical? –> Boiling, Melting, Freezing Pt. | Physical because you don't change the identity of the substance Water vapor is still water (liquid) or the water molecules in ice |
density | mass/volume how much stuff there is per unit of volume (cm3) |
Which is more dense if they have the same mass? 1 - less volume 2 - more volume | 1 is more dense because there is more stuff/molecules packed into a smaller volume/area |
Which is more dense if they have the same volume? 1 - less mass 2 - more mass | 2 is more dense because there is more stuff/mass per unit of volume (cm3) |
