AQUIFER | an underground water reservoir |
BAR | an underwater barrier of mud |
BARRIER | an island running parallel to the mainland, built up by the action of waves and currents, that serves to protect the coast from erosion |
BRACKISH | fresh and saltwater mixed together |
CHENIER | a ridge of high ground in the coastal marsh that runs parallel to the coastline |
COASTAL EROSION | the loss of coastal land |
COASTAL MARSH | wet grassland along the coastline |
COASTAL PLAIN | a low flat land region built up by the river sediment |
CONTINENTAL DRIFT | the gradual movement of continents |
CONTINENTAL SHELF | a relatively shallow seabed surrounding a continent |
DELTA | a landform shaped by sediment deposits at the mouth of a river or tidal inlet |
FAULT | a fracture in earth's crust |
FLOODPLAIN | a plain boarding a river and subject to flooding |
GEOLOGY | the study of how the earth was formed |
GLOBAL WARMING | an increase of the average temperature of the earths atmosphere |
LAGOON | a shallow body of water especially one separated from the larger body of water |
LOESS | windblown deposit of fine grained silt |
MAGMA | molten rock |
MEANDER | to wind or turn |
MUD LUMP | mound like formations at the mouths of rivers caused by pressure from depositing sediment |
NATURAL LEVEE | strips of land |
OXBOW LAKE | a crescent shaped lake formed when a river meander is cut off from the main channel |
PANGAEA | an ancient supercontinent that included all the land masses of the earth |
POINT BAR-POINT BAR | sediment built up in a turn of a river that forces the current to erode the opposite bank |
RESERVOIR | a natural or artificial pond or lake used for water storage |
SALT DOME | a tall vertical column of salt squeezed up through the ground by extreme pressure |
SALTWATER INTRUSION | saltwater movement into a marsh |
SEDIMENT | suspended particles of dirt and sand carried by river water |
SEDIMENTARY ROCK | Rock formed by sediment and pressure |
TECTONIC FORCES | forces that cause land masses to split apart of collide together |
TERRACE | an elevated ridge of an old riverbed |
WATER TABLE | the depth in the ground at which water is located |
