Unit 1- words 1-11

TermDefinition
Geocentric Model Earth-centered. The earliest model of the solar system. This model assumed that Earth was at the center of the solar system.
Ptolemy The scientist who developed the geocentric model that astronomers used for 14 centuries. (he lived from about 100-170)
Heliocentric model Sun-centered. The current model of the solar system where Earth and the other planets orbit the sun.
Copernicus The scientist who developed the first detailed heliocentric model. (he lived from 1473-1543)
Galileo The scientist who improved the telescope in 1609 which allowed astronomers to see that Jupiter had moons and Venus had phases. These observations helped support the heliocentric model.
Big Bang Theory The theory that all matter and energy in the universe was compressed into an extremely small volume that 13 to 15 billion years ago exploded and began expanding in all directions.
Universe Space and all the matter and energy in it
Galaxy A large collection of stars, gas, and dust held together by gravity. Galaxies can contain hundreds of billions of stars
Milky Way Galaxy Our solar system is located in this galaxy. It is a spiral galaxy. The sun is located in a partial spiral arm of the Milky Way, near the edge of the galaxy
Solar System A collection of large bodies (planets) and small bodies (moons, dwarf planets, comets, asteroids, and meteoroids) that orbit our central star, the sun.
Planet A spherical object that orbits the sun
