absolute value | The distance the number is from zero on a number line. |
additive inverse | Two integers that are opposites. The sum of an integer and its additive inverse is zero. |
graph | The process of placing a point on a number line or on a coordinate plane at its proper location. |
integer | Any number from the set (...-4,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,4...) where ... means continue without end. |
negative integer | An integer that is less than zero. They are written with a - sign. |
opposites | Two integers are represented on the number line by points that are the same distance from zero, but on opposite sides of zero. |
positive integer | An integer that is greater than zero. They are written with or without a + sign. |
zero pair | The result when one positive counter is paired with one negative counter. The value of the pair is 0. |
commutative property | The order in which two numbers are added or multiplied does not change the sum or product. Example: a+b=b+a |
associative property | The way in which numbers are grouped does not change their sum or product. Example: a+(b+c)=(a+b)+c |
identity property | The sum of an addend and zero is the addend. Example: 5+0=0 |
