Medical Terminology 1

TermDefinition
Prefix- a word element at the beginning of the word
Suffix- a word element at the end of a word
Aphasia- lack of ability to speak
Cyanosis- a condition of having a bluish color
Dysphagia- difficulty swallowing
Dyspnea- difficulty breathing
Electrocardiogram- record the electricity in the heart
Endocarditis- Inflammation of the heart
Gastrostomy- a surgically created opening in the stomach
Mastectomy- removal of the breast
Nephritis- inflammation of the kidney
Oliguria- a small amount of urine
Anterior- at or toward the front of the body
Posterior- at or toward the back of the body
Proximal- the part nearest to the center
Distal- the part farthest away from the center
Lateral- away from the midline
Medial- at or neat the middle or midline
Atrophy- the decreased size or wasting of tissue
Chronic- an ongoing illness that is slow or gradual in onset
Contracture- the lack of joint mobility caused by the abnormal shortening of a muscle
Incontinence- unable to control urine or bowel
Gastritis- Inflammation of the stomach
Cystitis- Inflammation of the bladder
Appendectomy- surgical removal of the appendix
