Scientific Inquiry Vocabulary including STEM safety
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Criteria | Needs or requirements for a design process. May be such things as a list of "must haves" for a prototype. |
Constraints | A limit or restriction to a design process. May be such things as appearance, funding, space, materials, or human capabilities. |
Protocol | A predefined procedural method in the design and implementation of an experiment. |
Safety Symbol | Images required to warn and inform you of the possible risks that can cause serious health issues or injuries. |
Combustible | Able to catch fire and/or burn easily. |
Graduated Cylinder | Tall, narrow container with a volume scale used for measuring liquids |
Errors (in science) | the unintentional misstatements or inaccurate measurements in an experiment |
Engineering Design | A series of steps used to assist in designing and developing a new product to solve a real-world problem. |
Scientific Method | A logical, systematic approach to find the answer to a scientific problem. |
Hazard | Dangerous phenomenon, substance, human activity or condition. |
Prototype | An early sample, model, or release of a product that is built to test a concept or process to solve a problem. |
Control Group | A group in an experiment that does not get experimental upon and is used to compare experimental data to. |
Independent Variable | Component in an experiment that is changed, manipulated, or altered in order to produce data. |
Dependent Variable | The data component of an experiment that is produced or responds because of a change made by the scientist. |
Constants (in an experiment) | The conditions that do not change during an experiment and that must be present for the experiment to be performed. |
Observation | A gathering of information in order to understand. |
Qualitative | Non-numerical information - 5 senses and comparison. |
Quantitative | Numerical Information: counting, measurement, calculation. |
Inference | Assumption made about an observation based on prior knowledge and experience. |
Hypothesis | Educated guess of the solution to a problem using what you know and observe written in an "If, then, because format" |
Experiment | a set of controlled observations that test the hypothesis |
Precision | A measure of how close measurements/data is to one another. |
Accuracy | A description of how close a measurement is to the true or expected value. |
Prediction | A statement of what will happen next based off inferences |
Beaker | A glass container with a flat bottom that scientists use to hold liquids. |
Outlier | A single data point far outside the average value of the measured group or trend. |
