UNIT 1: ART DEFINED

TermDefinition
art Expressive product made by an artist and it communicates its expressiveness in some way.
balance Aesthetically pleasing equilibrium in the arrangement or combination of elements.
controversy A discussion marked by the expression of opposing views.
design The arrangement of visual elements in a work of art.
imagery Expressive reproductions of images, persons, or things.
proportion Relation of one part to another, or of parts to the whole in respect to the size, height, width, and scale.
Abstractism Having a generalized form with only a symbolic resemblance to real objects.
frontal Facing front, as in a portrait.
legend A story coming down from the past.
medium Material of a work of art.
myth A traditional story of historical events that serves to unfold part of the world view on different subjects.
profile A side view, in a portrait.
symmetrical Aesthetic balance that is achieved when parts of an object are arranged about a real or imaginary central line, and the parts on one side correspond with those on the other side.
technique How a piece of art is made.
commemorate To call to remembrance, to serve as a memorial.
documentation Providing evidence that an event occurred
monument A memorial, a lasting remembrance, evidence.
narrate To tell a story
sarcophagus An above ground tomb used by the Egyptians
statue A 3-Dimensional piece of artwork
symbolism Using an image to convey a deeper meaning in a piece of art.
tapestry A heavy hand-woven textile used for depicting a story.
equestrian portrait A portrait of a person on horseback.
medium Material used in a work of art.
motif A recurring element in a work of art. A single or repeated design or color.
political power An influence, usually political, or authority over others.
Propaganda Information, advertisements, or other media designed with the intent of hindering or helping an individual, government, political party, or other group.
