Nature of Science and Lab Safety

TermDefinition
SCIENCE The investigation and exploration of natural events and of the new information that results from those investigations
OBSERVATION the action or process of observing something or someone carefully or in order to gain information
INFERENCE A logical explanation of an observation that is drawn from prior knowledge or experience.
HYPOTHESIS A possible explanation for an observation that can be tested by scientific investigations.
PREDICTION A statement of what will happen next in a sequence of events.
SCIENTIFIC THEORY - An explanation of observations or events that is based on knowledge gained from many observations and investigations.
SCIENTIFIC LAW A rule that describes a pattern in nature.
CRITICAL THINKING - Comparing what you already know with the information you are given in order to decide whether you agree with it.
ANALYZE To examine methodically and in detail the make-up or structure of something, especially information, typically for purposes of explanation and interpretation.
EVALUATE To determine the significance, worth, or condition of usually by careful appraisal
inference a logical explanation of an observation that is drawn form prior knowledge
Limitation a circumstance that allows only a specific amount of something
Preventive Safety equipment equipment such as goggles and lab aprons used for protection and to Prevent emergencies
Physical Science study of matter and energy includes physics and chemistry
earth science study of earth including rocks and soils includes geology, volcanology, and seismology
Life Science the study of living things also called Biology
