Exponents Vocab
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Write in expanded form, | Write out using multiplication Ex: 5^3= 5x5x5 |
Write in exponential form, | Write using a base and an exponent Ex: 5x5x5=5^3 |
Write in standard form, | Multiply to find the answer Ex: 5^3=125 |
Multiply Powers with Like Bases | keep the base and add the exponents a^m * a^n=a^m+n 3^2 * 3^4 =3^6 |
Divide Powers with like bases | Keep the base and subtract the exponents a^m / a^n=a^m-n 3^4 / 3^2 =3^4-2 = 3^2 |
Raise a power to a power | To raise a power to a power, multiply the exponents. a^m^n= a^m*n ex. (5^2)^3 = 5^2x3 = 5^6 |
To raise a monomial to a power | Keep the bases and multiply all exponts by the exponent outside the parentheses |
Raise a fraction to a power | to raise a fraction to a power, raise the numerator and denominator to the power |
Multiply Monomials | multiply the coefficients and add the exponents |
Divide Monomials | divide the coefficients and subtract the exponents |
negative exponent | an exponent less than zero which causes the base and its exponent to move positions in a fraction |
Power of 0 | equals 1 |
