indications for administration | Treatment of known opiate/opioid overdose Unconscious for unknown reason, but has decreased respiratory rate (suspicion of opiate/opioid use) |

Medication interactions | Administration of naloxone can result in the sudden onset of withdrawal (agitation, tachycardia, pulmonary edema, nausea, vomiting, and, in neonates, seizures) |
adult and pediatric doses | Patient over age 5 and/or 20kg: 0.4-2mg; IM/ 2mg; IN (1mg per nare) Patient under age 5 and/or 20kg: o 0.1mg/kg IM Repeat every 3-5 mins MCEP after 2 mg is needed |
special notes | Patient may quickly become conscious and combative; with large doses (greater than 4-5mg) flash pulmonary edema has been encountered. Doses higher than 2mg are often necessary for patients under the influence of opioids with longer transports |
