What is a schedule 1 or CI drug? A high potential abusive drug.
What is a schedule 2 or CII drug? A high potential for abuse and physical or psychological dependence.
What are schedule 3-5 or CIII-CV drug? Lead to moderate or low physical dependence high psychological dependence.
If there is a limited quantity of a CII drug and partial fill must be given, how long do we have to complete the prescription? Dispense within 72 hours
Where do you store CII medication? Locked safe
How many refills are you allowed on a CII medication? No refills
How many total fills are you allowed on a CIII-CV medication? 6 total

What is a noncontrolled legend prescription? Meds that aren't classified as control substance.

What are some examples of a CIII medication? Testosterones, Benzenediamine, Acetaminophen, and etc.
What are some examples of a CIV medication? Lorazepam, Temazepam, Zaleplon, and etc.
What are some examples of a CV medication? Diphenoxylate, Guaifenesin, and Pregabalin
What state agency regulates controlled substances in the U.S.? DEA and Board of Pharmacy
What is the controlled substance act? A federal legislation that classifies all controlled substances into one five drug schedule.
Why is a schedule I never stocked in the pharmacy? It's illegal in the U.S. to posses it.
What information must be on a schedule II medication? Full name, address of patient, the date of issue, and medication info.
Are schedule II medications allowed to be faxed to the pharmacy? No.
What is a parenteral medication? Describes injectable medications
Why did The Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act become a law in 2016? To support a targeted approach to dealing with the opioid crisis.
What 6 area does CARA cover? Prevention treatment, recovery, law enforcement, criminal justice, and overdose reversal.
If a patient needs more of their CII medication but they have run out, how do they get a refill? They must write a new prescription.
How soon after a partial fill of a narcotic medication was given to a patient must the remainder be filled? 30 days.
When a pharmacist needs to order a narcotic medication, what form do they use to place the order? DEA Form 222.
What happens if the pharmacy fails to complete the partial fill for a CII medication within 72 hours? Must call the prescriber to request a new prescription.
What are the acceptable methods of storage of schedule II medications? To keep in locked safe or a locked cabinet.
If the pharmacy were to transfer a CII medication to another pharmacy, what form would you see? DEA Form 222.

What information is required for the purchase of an exempt narcotic? Must be 18+ years old and have an ID.
If a schedule V cough medicine is purchased, what is the limitations per patient per 48 hours period? 4 oz.
What is the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act? Schedule Listed Chemical Product.
What is the daily limit in grams of Sudafed or Sudafed containing products? 3.6 grams.
What is the monthly limit of Sudafed? 9 grams.
What is the limit of Sudafed in a month if it is a mail order prescription? 7.5 grams.
What must the pharmacist write across the front of the prescription if that prescription was transferred? VOID.
What must the receiving pharmacist write on the prescription that was transferred into them? TRANSFER.
If a Schedule II medication is being transferred to another pharmacy in need of the medication, what form needs to be filled out? By filling out this for, it is produced in triplicate, where do those forms go? DEA Form 222.
What is a DEA number? A number assigned to a prescriber that documents their authority to prescribe controlled substances.
What does an A at the beginning of a DEA number represent? Indicates the practitioner.
What does an X at the beginning of a DEA number represent? Assigned to the practitioners in a buprenorphine.
What letter should the second letter of the DEA be? Takes the first letter of patient's last name.
How many digits are in a DEA number? 7 digits.
How many letters are in a DEA number? 7 numbers.
How can I figure out if a DEA number is real? What is the process? Second letter DEA number matches the first letter of the prescriber's last name.
What are the two options for filing paper prescriptions in the pharmacy? The first option is to fill it in as non control and control. Second option is to do them as maintenance medications, controlled substances, and narcotics.
What should go on the outside of the file to indicate that the prescription inside are controlled substance prescriptions? A red C stamp.
How long must be prescription records be kept on the premises? 2 years.
What is a reverse distributor? To transfer controlled substance to the maneuver to facilitate disposal.
If I was going to transfer a schedule II medication to another pharmacy that needed it, what form would I use? DEA Form 222.
Controlled substances that are expired, damaged, or unwanted need to go to reverse distributor for destruction. What will need to be filled out first? DEA Form 41
How often does this occur? Once a year
What is a drug diversion? The act of transferring a prescription medication illegally
What happens when there is a loss or theft of medication in the pharmacy where controlled substances are involved? Missing controlled substances must be reported to the DEA and local police as soon as the loss is known.
What form must be filled out? DEA Form 106.
Can the pharmacist fill this form out on-line? Yes.
How long must a copy of this form be kept in the pharmacy's records for? 2 years.
How could someone forge a prescription? Where would they get the prescription from to forge it? Two different color ink are cased if the writing is too perfect. Written for obscure amount of medication.
What are some methods people have used to forge a prescription? Catching someone stealing pads, narcotics, or over the counter supplies.
What are some of the characteristics of a forged prescription? Prescription looks too good, Quantities, directions or dosages being different than usual medical use, prescription appears to be photo copied, and etc.
What are some of the ways drug diversion prevention can take place in your future pharmacy? Become familiar with patients, become familiar with prescribers and their signature, know how to determine whether a DEA number is legitimate and verifying prescriber's DEA numbers.
What are some of the Medicaid-tamper-resistant prescription features? Copying, erasing or modifying, and counterfeiting
What are some of the exemptions to the Medicaid tamper- resistant prescription requirements? Managed care prescription, items, or services. Prescriptions for patients in institutional and clinical settings, where total medical services are remembered together instead of reimbursing medications separately.
What is tolerance? When a person's body adapts to the medications, causing the meds to not work as well.
What is a physical dependence? Occurs when there is a sudden decrease in the amount of medication taken.
What is a chemical dependence? When a person craves for medication but it doesn't mean that they are addicted.
What would the appearance be of someone that is having a problem with substance abuse look like? A person that tries to manipulate into getting the medication.
How would their behavior be? Overly assertive personally, Mood disturbance and lack of impulse control, Attempts to deceive the pharmacy staff by requesting refills early.
What would their responses be when asked a question? Gives evasive or vague answers to questions regarding medical history, state that a prescription has been lost or stolen and should be replaced, state that they are traveling through town or visiting a friend or relative.
What are some of the actions a pharmacy technician can take when responding to substance use disorder in patients? Confirm the current address at each visit, Confirm a telephone number, If provided by the patient, Make sure prescriptions are written for the limited quantity.
How can you recognize substance use disorder in colleagues? Changes in attendance and punctuality, appearance, behavior, skill accuracy, and involvement with controlled substance.
What would their timeliness, appearance, behavior and skills look like if you colleagues has an issue with substance use disorder? Absence from work without notification or excessive number of sick days used or both. Frequent disappearances from the work site, long unexplained absences, improbable excuses, and Etc.
What should you do if you suspect substance use disorder in a coworker? Talk to your Pharmacist, Manager, or human resource department.
What type of treatment are available for employees? State licensing boards, employee assistance programs (EAPs) state diversion programs and peer assistance organizations will refer individuals and families to appropriate counseling and treatment services.
What are the names of some of the medications that are used to help with substance use disorder? Acamprosate, Disulfiram, Naltrexone, Buprenorphine, Naloxone, Buprenorphine-naloxone, Bupropion, Nicotine replacement therapy, and Verenicline.
