Actinic Keratosis | A slowly developing, localized thickening of the outer layers of the skin resulting from long-term, prolong exposure to the sun. Also called solar kerotosis. |
Atopic Dermatitis | A chronic skin inflammation seen in patients with hereditary susceptibility to puritis. |
Basal Cell Carcinoma | The most common form of skin cancer, arises from epidermal cells known as basal cells and is rarely metastatic. |
Carbuncle | A necrotizing infection of skin and subcutaneous tissue caused by multiple furuncles (boils). It is usually caused by bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. |
Cellulitis | An acute, diffuse, spreading infection involving the skin, suncutaneous tissue, and sometimes muscle as well. It is usually caused by a wound infected with Streptococcus or Staphylococcus spp. |
Dermatitis | Any inflammation of the skin. |
Dermatosis | General term for any abnormal skin condition. |
Dermis | The layer of skin just below the epidermis, consisting of papillary and reticular layers containing blood, lymphatic vessels, nerves and nerves endings, glands, and hair follicles. |
Eczema | A pruritic, papulovesicular dermatitis occurring as a reaction to many endogenous and exogenous agents, and characterized by erythema, edema, and an inflammatory infiltrate of the dermis that includes oozing, vesiculation, crusting, and scaling. |
Epidermis | The superficial, avascular layers of the skin, made up up an outer, dead, cornified portion and a deeper, living, cellular portion. |
Folliculitis | Inflammation of a follicle, usually a hair follicle. A follicle is defined as any sac or pouchlike cavity. |
Furuncle | A painful skin nodule caused by a staphylococcal infection that enters skin through the hair follicles. Also called a boil. |
Impetigo | A pus-generating, contagious superficial skin infection, usually caused by a staphylococci or streptococci. It is usually occurred in the face and is most commonly seen in children. |
Papule | A small circumscribed, superficial, solid elevation of the skin that is usually pink in color and less than 0.5 to 1cm in diameter. |
Pediculosis | An infestation with lice of the family Pediculidae. |
Pruritus | An unpleasant cutaneous sensation that provokes the desire to rub or scratch the skin to obtain relief. |
Psoriasis | A common, chronic squamous cell dermatosis with polygenic (multi-gene) inheritance and a fluctuating pattern of recurrence and remission. |
Pustule | A visible collection of pus within or beneath the epidermis. |
Scabies | A contagious disease caused by S. scabiei, the itch mite, characterized by intense itching of the skin and injury to the skin (excoriation) resulting from scratching. |
Tinea | A group of fungal skin diseases caused by dermatophytes of several kinds and characterized by itching; scaling; & sometimes, painful lesions. Tinea is a general term for infections of various dermatophytes that occur on several sites. aka called ringworms |
Vesicles | A small sac containing liquid; also called cyst. |
