Ch. 1 - Why is everyone on the island? Because they were being evacuated, but their plane crashed.
Ch. 1 - Where are all of the adults? They have been killed on the plane.
Ch. 1 - What does Ralph use to call the assembly? A Conch
Ch. 2 - What does Ralph think should be done to attract help? They should build a Signal Fire
Ch. 3 - What is Jack doing whilst Ralph and Simon are building shelters? He is Hunting.
Ch. 4 - How do the others react to Jack's facepainting? His mask scares Bill and Sam and Eric feel "compelled" by it.
Ch. 4 - What do Roger and Maurice do to the littl'uns? They walk by some littl'uns building sandcastles on the beach. Roger kicks at the sandcastles and scatters their collection of stones. Maurice is embaressed and goes away whilst Roger stalks a littl'un and throws stones at him.
Ch. 4 - Why does the passing ship not see the signal fire? The Hunters have allowed the fire to go out - no one was looking after it. Jack returns carrying a dead pig.
Ch. 5 - How does Ralph think the group should deal with the fear of the beast?
Ch. 5 - What is Simon's theory about the Beast? Simon suggests the Beast is actually themselves. He tries to explain "mankind's essential illness", but nobody takes him seriously.
Ch. 5 - What does Jack do to ease everyone's fear of the Beast? He takes everyone except Ralph, Piggy and Simon on a mock-hunt.
Ch. 5 - Who stays with Ralph after everyone else is gone? Piggy and Simon.
Ch. 6 - Who is the new arrival on the island? The dead airman.
Ch. 6 - What do Sam and Eric mistake the new arrival for? The Beast.
Ch. 7 - How does Ralph almost win back the respect of the hunters? Ralph joins in on the pig hunt and wounds a pig. He feels he has earnt a "new respect".
Ch. 7 - Which boys think they have seen the beast at the end of Ch. 7. Ralph, Piggy and Simon.
Ch. 8 - How does Jack try to get rid of Ralph as Chief? He holds a vote to remove Ralph as Chief. It fails.
Ch. 8 - What is the first thing Jack's new tribe kill? A sow (a female pig).
Ch. 8 - What is "The Lord of the Flies"? It is the dead sows head on a stick. This was meant to be a gift for "the Beast".
Ch. 9 - What does Simon discover when he goes to see the Beast? "The Beast" is actually a dead airman.
Ch. 9 - What happens to Simon when he tries to tell everyone else what he has discovered? He is killed, because the others mistake him for the Beast.
Ch. 10 - How do Ralph and Piggy feel about what happened to Simon? Ralph is appauled at what happened the night before. He knows he was a part of it and the evil that he is capable of. Piggy won't face up to what he did. He says it was an accident and he won't take responsiblilty for what happened the night before.
Ch. 10 - How does Jack use ideas of the Beast to help control his tribe? Jack says it was the Beast in disguise that they killed, but he continues, saying the beast can never truly be killed. He says the beast is unpredictable and they can try and leave food for it after they hunt. Their fear gives Jack more power over them.
Ch. 10 - What do Jack's tribe steal from Ralph and Piggy? Piggy's glasses.
Ch. 11 - What happens to Piggy when he goes to talk to Jack's tribe? He is killed.
Ch. 12 - Why does Ralph hide in the forest? Because he thinks it is a good hiding place.
Ch. 12 - How do Jack's tribe know where Ralph is hiding? Sam and Eric are tortured and tell Jack where Ralph is hiding.
Ch. 12 - What attracts new visitors to the island? The fire that was meant to smoke Ralph out of his hiding place.
Ch. 12 - Who are the new visitors? The Naval Officer.
Ch. 12 - What happens to Ralph in the end? He breaks down in tears. He cries for Piggy - who realises he was a good friend. He also cries for "the darkness in man's heart" - the evil inside every person. He has lost his innocence forever.
