Pain and Inflammation
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is inflammation? | A response to tissue injury, it triggers a vascular response and migration of fluid and cells to injured site. |
Is inflammation and infection the same thing? | No, infection is caused by microorganisms and results in inflammation. |
What are the two phases does the inflammation occur? | Vascular Phase and Delayed Phase |
What is the time frame of the vascular phase? | 10-15 minutes after the injury- vasodilation, increased capillary permeability |
What is the time frame for the Delayed phase? | When the leukocytes infiltrate the inflamed tissue. |
What are the chemical mediators? | Histamine, Kinins, and Prostaglandins |
What is histamine ? | The first mediator in inflammatory process; it causes dilation of arteriole and increased capillary permeability. |
What is Kinin? | (Bradykinin) increases capillary permeability and sensation of pain |
Why is Prostaglandins ? | Vasodilation, relaxation of smooth muscles, increased capillary permeability, and sensitization of the nerve cells to pain |
What are the cardinal signs of inflammation? | Redness (Erythema), Swelling (Edema), Heat, Pain, Loss of Function |
Why is Cyclooxygenase (COX)? | This is the enzyme responsible for forming prostaglandins |
What causes inflammation and pain at a tissue injury site? | The synthesis of prostaglandins |
How many forms of COX are there? | Two |
What is the function of COX 1? | Protect the stomach lining and regulates blood platelets |
What is the function of COX 2? | Triggers inflammation and pain |
What is the action of anti-inflammatory drugs? | Inbit the biosynthesis of prostaglandin and are called, prostaglandins inhibitors OR anti-inflammatories |
What other drugs are considered anti-inflammatory? | analgesics(relieve pain), antipyretics(reduce elevated body temperature), and anti-coagulants (inhibit platelet aggregation) |
What is the oldest anti-inflammatory drug? | Aspirin |
What is NSAIDs used for? | To decrease inflammation and pain for clients with some type of muscloskeletal condition |
What drugs are included with NSAIDs? | Aspirin and other aspirin-like drugs that inhibit the enzyme COX |
What is the most appropriate drug for reducing swelling, pain, and stiffness in joints? | NSAIDs |
If a client can take aspirin for inflammation without GI upset what drug is recommended? | Salicylate |
