Three concepts addressed in pharmacodynamics | The medication's mechanism of action (agonist or antagonist) Therapeutic window Therapeutic index |
Example of an agonist | Albuterol stimulates bronchiole dilation to help patients with asthma breathe better. |
Example of an antagonist | Metoprolol inhibits the stimulation of teheheart to decrease cardiac output |

How is the therapeutic index (TI) value determined? | By taking the toxic dose of a given medication and dividing by the effective dose. |
What does a high therapeutic index (TI) value indicate? | Medications with a higher TI are safer. |
Examples of medication with a high therapeutic index | ibuprofen |
Example of medication with a low therapeutic index | Phenytoin |
