What is the main difference between the geocentric and heliocentric models? In the geocentric model the earth is in the center but in the heliocentric model the sun is in the center
Which astronomers are associated with the geocentric model? Ptolemy and aristotle
Which astronomers are associated with the heliocentric model? Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, Newton, Hubble
List the four inner planets in order from the sun. Mercury venus earth and mars
Explain why the inner planets are called “terrestrial planets.” They are all small and have solid, rocky surfaces
List the four outer planets in order from the sun. Jupiter saturn uranus and neptune
Explain why the outer planets are called “gas giants.” These planets are larger (BUT LESS DENSE) than inner planets and composed of gas
What is an asteroid? Small, rocky bodies in space that are to numerous and too small to be called planets
What is the asteroid belt and where is it located? The asteroid belt is where most asteroids are found, located between the orbit of jupiter and mars
What is a comet? A comet is a small body of ice, rock, and cosmic dust loosely packed together
What happens to a comet as it approaches the sun? Heat from the sun melts the ice and causes the comet to “grow” a tail; this tail is blown away from the sun by solar winds
Define ellipse A flattened circle; shape of a planet’s orbit around the sun.
use the drawing tool to draw an ellipse. Big giant circle
What is the Big Bang theory? States that the universe began when a single point of densely packed matter rapidly expanded, sending matter in all directions into space
What evidence do astronomers have to support this theory? Galaxies moving apart from each other
About how old is the universe? 13.7 billion years old
What is the name of the galaxy we live in? The milky way galaxy
What type of galaxy do we live in? Spiral galaxy
What keeps the planets moving in orbit around the sun? The suns GRAVITY + the planets INERTIA
What would cause the moon to be pulled into Earth? If the moon had no INERTIA
What would cause the moon to fly off into space? If the moon had no gravity
What two factors determine how much gravitational pull one object will have on another? (1) their masses and (2) the separation distance between them.
planets into the correct order from the sun. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
