TermDefinition
Pharisees Educated people who both observed and enforced Jewish law
Sadducees Elite powerful backgrounds. Religious and cooperated with Romans
Pax Romana means Roman Peace in Latin lasted across the Roman Empire for over 200 years, beginning with Augustus Caesar.
Zealots opposed Roman occupation believed God would send a messiah that wold save the Jewish people from oppression
Resurrection coming back to life after being declared dead through divine intervension
Baptism A practice ritual cleansing by plunging into water
Crucifixion A slow and painful Roman method of execution. Jesus was sentenced to crucifixion
Martyrs People who die for their beliefs many Christians were martyred for their belief in Jesus
Bible Holy text that is composed of 2 major sections; Old Testament, and New Testament. Sacred book for Christians
Old Testament First part of the bible, comprising 39 books and corresponding approximately to the Hebrew Bible. Promises a messiah will save God's people
Salvation deliverance from sin and it's consequences, believed by Christians to be brought about by faith in Jesus Christ
New Testament Second part of the Christinan Bible written in Greek, recording the teachings and life of Jesus and his earliest followers. Four Gospels, acts of apostles, twenty one epistles by Paul, book of revelations
Parables Stories with a moral, Jesus often used parables to in important lessons
Epistles Formal letters written by early leaders in the Christian church. Paul wrote a number of epistles that explain Christian beliefs in great detail
Trinity Christian understanding that God is represented in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit
Ethics Issues of right and wrong and how to treat people
Golden Rule Rule of ethical conduct that Jesus taught "Do to others as you would have them do to you" Matthew 7:12 and Luke 6:31
Ascension The ascent of Christ into heaven on the 40th day after the Resurrection
Denominations Christians have divided themselves into different branches. Differences come down to church tradition, worship style and history
Good Friday The Friday before Easter Sunday, on which the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ is commemorated. Christians believe Jesus died to pay for personal sins
Easter Most important festival of Christian church celebrates Resurrection 3 days after Jesus died on the Cross he rose into heaven
Providence The protective care of God or of nature as a spiritual power
Messiah The promised deliverer of the Jewish people prophesied in the Old Testament. Hebrew world meaning Christ.
Sermon on the Mount A speech delivered by Jess to the disciples and others, containing the Beatitudes and important fundamentals of Christian teaching. Matthew 5:7 and Luke 6:20-49
The Great Commission The instruction from Jesus to his disciples to spread the gospel to all the nations of the world. Matthew 22: 16-20
Disciples A personal follower of Jesus during his life, especially one of the 12 Apostles
Conversion The fact of changing one's religion or belief system
Sin An immoral act considered to be a transgression or violation against God's law
Repentance The action of repenting sincere regret or remorse. Each person who turns to God and Jesus in genuine repentance will be saved
