T5.2 Earths Movement

Seasons, Gravity, Inertia

TermDefinition
equinox Two times of year when the day and night lengths are about 12 hours and the Earth isn't tilted toward or away from the sun
solstice Two times of year when the day or night lengths are at their longest or shortest. The Earth is either tilted towards or away from the sun at 23.5 degrees
axis An imaginary line that passes through Earth's center and the North and South poles
23.5 the degree to which the Earth is tilted
rotation the spinning of Earth on its axis
revolution the movement of one object around another
365.25 the number of days Earth takes to revolve around the sun
orbit the path the earth takes around the sun
gravity force that attracts all objects toward each other
law of universal gravitation states that every object in the universe attracts every other object
inertia tendency of an object to resist a change in motion (Newton's first law of motion)
tilt and revolution the two reasons we have seasons
mass and distance the two factors on which the strength of gravity depends
Winter The season the northern hemisphere experiences when it is tilted AWAY from the sun.
Summer The season the northern hemisphere experiences when it is tilted TOWARD the sun.
Spring/Fall The season we experience when Earth is not tilted toward or away from the sun.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
