what is a complication of long term blood transfusion therapy? Iron Overload, normal iron level is 2-3g ea unit of blood has 200mg of iron and anyone getting more than 100 units often develop iron overload.
what do you check before starting a transfusion and during transfusion? Temp, bp, hr,
When is the most critical time for during transfusion? first 10-15 minutes of transfusion, nurse must stay with pt. slowly start transfusion, if allergic reaction or incompatibility occurs it will usually happen with in the first 50 ml of blood
complication to iron overload cardio issues like pericarditis, arrhythmia, CHF, thyroid insuff., endocrine and pancreas malfunction, liver fibrosis (scarring)
Treatment of Iron Overload is what? deferoxamine (Desferal)IV prevents overload if given correctly, erythropoietin (epogen) sub Q, pt must have bone marrow capability of producing RBC and proper nutrients.
