Name the four medical uses of Opiates. Pain Relief, Intestinal disorders, Cough Suppressant, Sedatives (cancer treatment)
Name the Short-term Effects (on the brain) of A SINGLE DOSE Depress the CNS. Affects higher centers of the brain. Affects lower brain stem (vomiting and nausea). Depresses cough center of the brain stem.
Name the Short-term Effects (on the body) of A SINGLE DOSE Surge of pleasure (rush) followed by a state of gratification (high). Body feels warm, limbs feel heavy, mouth becomes dry. The user may go "on the nod"; an alternate wakeful and dreamy/sleepy stupor.
Name the Short-term Effects of A HIGH DOSE The user can't be aroused. Pupils constrict to pinpoints. Skin feels cold and clammy. Respiration center can become so deeply depressed it can lead to death.
Name the Long-term Effects of opiate use Abscesses and infection at injection site. Hep B & C, and HIV infection. Meningitis. Pneumonia.
Duration of Opiate Withdrawal (Heroin Morphine & Methadone) Heroin: 4 hrs. Morphine: 6 hrs. Methadone: 12-24 hrs.
What is the deference between Methadone/LAAM and Naltrexone? Methadone and LAAM eliminate drug cravings- Naltrexone does not. Also, Naltrexone is used for short-term interventions.
