Rhodes Unit 10
Energy in the Earth System
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Earth system | all of the matter, energy, and processes within Earth's boundary |
geosphere | the mostly solid, rocky part of Earth |
hydrosphere | the part of Earth that is liquid water |
cryosphere | Made up of the frozen water on Earth |
atmosphere | mostly made of the invisible gases that surround Earth |
biosphere | made up of living things and the areas of Earth where they are found |
air pressure | The measure of the force with which air molecules push on an area of a surface |
thermosphere | the uppermost layer of the atmosphere |
mesosphere | the layer of the atmosphere between the stratosphere and the thermosphere |
stratosphere | the layer of the atmosphere between the mesosphere and troposphere |
troposphere | the lowest layer of the atmosphere |
ozone layer | an area in the stratosphere where ozone is highly concentrated; absorbs most of the solar radiation |
greenhouse effect | the process by which gases in the atmosphere, such as water vapor and carbon dioxide, absorb and give off infrared radiation |
temperature | a measure of the average kinetic energy of particles |
heat | energy that is transferred between objects that are at different temperatures |
radiation | the transfer of energy as electromagnetic waves |
convection | the transfer of energy due to the movement of matter |
conduction | the transfer of energy from one object to another through direct contact |
wind | the movement of air caused by differences in air pressure |
global wind | the movement of air over Earth's surface in patterns that are worldwide |
jet stream | narrow belts of high-speed winds that blow west to east, between 7 km and 16 km above Earth's surface |
local wind | the movement of air over short distances |
ocean current | streamlike movements of water in the ocean |
surface current | ocean currents that occur at or near the surface of the ocean, caused by wind |
deep current | movements of ocean water far below the surface |
