What drugs can have potential hypoglycemic effects with insulin? alcohol, anabolic steroids, MAO inhibitors, Guanethidine, salicylates, garlic and ginseng
What drugs increase serum glucose levels? Furosemide and thiazide diuretics
Why is it important to know when the peak action of insulin is? Need to monitor for signs of hypoglycemia at those times
What is the only type of insulin that can be given by IV? Regular
What is the advantage of human insulin over animal? Cost effectiveness and less likely to cause allergic reaction
What type of insulin is the base for all insulin? Regular
What are some of the additives to insulin? zinc, acetate buffers and protomine
What is the additive used in Lente? zinc
What is the additive use in NPH? zinc and protamine
Which type of insulin BEST mimics natural insulin secreting in respose to a meal? Lispro
When is Lispro injected? At the time of a meal or within 15 minutes
