equivalent decimals | decimals that name the same part of a whole |
ascending | numbers arranged from least to greatest |
descending | numbers arranged from greatest to least |
compatible numbers | numbers that are easy to compute with mentally |
Associative Property of Addition | states that addends can be regrouped and the sum remains the same |
Commutative Property of Addition | states that addends can be added in any order and the sum remains the same |
compensation | adjusting one or more numbers to make a computation easier and balancing the adjustment by changing the sum or difference |
underestimate | result of using lesser numbers to estimate a sum or product |
overestimate | result of using greater numbers to estimate a sum or product |
variable | a letter, such as n, that represents a number in an expression or equation |
coordinate grid | used to locate points in a plan using an ordered pair of numbers |
ordered pair | pair of numbers used to locate a point on a gird |
x-axis | horizontal number line in the coordinate grid |
y-axis | vertical number line in the horizontal axis |
origin | the point where the two axes of a coordinate girl intersect; (0,0) |
x-coordinate | the first number in an ordered pair, which names the distance to the right or left from the origin along the x-axis |
