Term | Definition |

Alliteration | The repetition of two or more consonant sounds in successive words in a line of either poetry or prose. |
Hyperbole | Exaggeration used to emphasize a point. |
Imagery | When words create a sensory experience using the five senses. The words paint a picture that appeals to your senses. |
Internal Rhyme | Rhyme that occurs within a line of poetry. |
Metaphor | A comparison of two unalike things by stating one thing is something else. |
Onomatopoeia | The use of words that imitate sound |
Personification | A thing, animal, or an abstract term is given human characteristics or qualities. |
Simile | A comparison of two things, connected by the words like or as. |
Symbol | An object used to represent an idea or a feeling. |
Rhyming Couplet | A two line stanza in poetry, which tend to have lines of equal length and the last word in each line rhymes with the other line. |
Mood | The emotional quality of the poem. The feeling created by the poem. |
Tone | The writer's attitude toward his/her subject. The tone may be playful, happy, serious... |
Rhyme | The repetition of sounds at the end of words. |
