A&P Endocrine System

Terms and Definitions of the Endocrine System organs.

TermDefinition
Oxytocin Stimulates contraction of uterus and the milk “let down” reflex.
Antidiuretic Hormone Promotes retention of water by kidneys.
Growth Hormone Stimulates growth (especially of bones and muscles) and metabolism.
Prolactin Stimulates milk production.
Follicle-Stimulating Hormone Stimulates production of ova and sperm.
Luteinizing Hormone Stimulates ovaries and testis.
Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone Stimulates the thyroid.
Adrenocorticotropic Hormone Stimulates adrenal cortex to secrete glucocorticoids.
Endocrine System Slower than Nervous System; Works with hormones;
Hormones Chemical substances that are secreted by cells into the extracellular fluids and regulate the metabolic activity of other cells in the body.
Chemistry of Hormones Almost all hormones can be classified as either amino acid-based molecules (proteins, peptides, and amines) and steroids.
Hypothalamus The hypothalamus is the link between the nervous system and the endocrine system through the pituitary gland; Found in the head.
Pituitary Approximately the size of a grape. Hangs by a stalk from the surface of the hypothalamus.
