TermDefinition
Judicial Branch Branch of government that interprets the laws
Judicial Review The power of the Supreme Court to determine if a law or Presidential action is allowed by the Constitution
Chief Justice Head U.S. Supreme Court Justice
U.S. Supreme Court Highest level of federal courts; decisions made by U.S. Supreme Court are final
Appellate Court (aka Appeals Court or Circuit Court) Higher level of federal courts that has appellate jurisdiction (hears a case that was tried by a lower court and determines whether the defendant - accused person has received a fair trial)
District Court (aka Trial Court) Lowest level of federal courts; has original jurisdiction (hears and decides cases for the first time)
Original Jurisdiction The right of a lower court to hear and decide a court case for the first time
Appellate Jurisdiction The right of a higher court to hear and review decisions made by the lower courts
Due Process People have the right to fair and reasonable laws and that rules have to be followed when enforcing laws
Opinion A written statement by the Supreme Court explaining how they arrived at their decision
Concurring Opinion An opinion written by a Supreme Court Justice who agrees with the majority, but for a different opinion
Dissenting Opinion An opinion written by a Supreme Court Justice who disagrees with the majority
Rule of Law The idea that all people must follow the laws, and that laws are enforced fairly
Felony A more serious crime that is punishable by jail time of more than a year
Misdemeanor A less serious crime that is punishable by jail time of less than a year
Statute Laws that are made by Congress
Ordinance Laws that are passed by local governments
Precedent When the Supreme Court has interpreted a law, this is how the law should be interpreted in the future
