Endocrine | Pertaining to a ductless gland that secretes directly into the blood |
Hormone | Secretion of an endocrine gland. Substance that travels in the blood and has a regulatory effect on tissues, organs, and glands. |
Receptor | Site on the cell membrane or within a cell to which a substance, such as a hormone attaches |
Target Tissue | Specific tissue on which a hormone acts. May also be called the target organ. |
Panhypopituitarism | Under activity of the entire pituitary gland |
Acromegaly | Overgrowth of bone and soft tissue, especially in the hands, feet, and face, caused by an excess growth hormone in an adult. |
Giantism | Overgrowth caused by an excess of growth hormone from the pituitary gland during childhood |
ACTH | Adrenocorticotropic Hormone |
ADH | Antidiuretic Hormone |
