10 Chemistry Unit 1
Separating Mixtures
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Mixture | A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined Can be separated without chemical reactions |
Evaporation | Separation techniques: Separating mixtures of liquids where the solid has dissolved (is soluble) in the liquid |
Soluble | Able to dissolve in water |
Filtration | Separation Technique: Separating mixtures of solids and liquids where the solid hasn't dissolved (insoluble) in the liquid |
Chromatography | Separation Technique: Separating mixtures of soluble inks and dyes Calculate Rf value |
Distillation | Separation Technique: Used to separate two liquids with 2 different boiling points |
Bohr Model | - Too simple - In the model, subatomic particles are still, while in reality, electrons are moving fast - Atoms seem 2D in the model, while they are actually 3D - Electrons shells: 2,8,8 (incorrect because shells have subshells) |
Subatomic particles | • Protons- (denoted as p+)located in nucleus, positive charge • Neutron- (denoted as no) located in nucleus, no charge/ neutral charge • Electrons- (denoted as e-) located in electron shells, negative charge |
