Chapter 14 - Urinary System

Dialysis Separation of substances by passage through a membrane
Acidosis Excessive acidity of body fluids (An increase in hydrogen ion concentration) Bicarbonate/Base is lost.
Alkalosis Loss of acid from the blood. Overabundance of bicarbonate. (Decrease in hydrogen ion concentration)
Hemodialysis Removal of unwanted substances from the blood by passage through a semipermeable membrane.
Dehydration Excessive loss of body fluids
Diuresis Excretion of urine (Increased Urinary Excretion)
Enuresis Involuntary urination usually at night (Bedwetting)
Polyuria Elimination of large amounts of urine, as in diabetes mellitus
Oliguria Elimination of small amounts of urine
Micturition Voiding of urine
Uremia Presence of toxic levels of urea and nitrogenous substances in the blood as a result of renal insufficiency
