Anastomosis Passage or communication between two vessels or organs
Fistula Abnormal passageway between two organs or from one organ to the body surface, such as between the rectum and anus (Anorectal Fistula)
Ascites Accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity. Form of edema. (Can be caused by heart disease, lymphatic or venous obstruction, cirrhosis, or changes in blood plasma)
Bariatrics Branch of medicine concerned with prevention and control of obesity and associated diseases
Bolus A mass, such as a rounded mass of food that is swallowed
Cachexia Profound ill health, malnutrition, and wasting
Caries Tooth Decay
Mastication Chewing
Deglutition Swallowing
Eructation Belching
Emesis Vomiting
Regurgitation Backward Flow
Gavage Process of feeding through a nasogastric tube into the stomach
Lavage Washing out of a cavity (Irrigation)
Ileus Intestinal obstruction. May be caused by lack of peristalsis or by contraction. Intestinal matter and gas may be relieved by insertion of a drainage tube.
Jaundice Yellowish coloring of skin, mucous membranes, and whites of the eyes caused by bile pigments in the blood. The main pigment is bilirubin, a by-product of erythrocyte destruction.
Ostomy Opening into the body
Stoma Surgically created opening to the body surface or between two organs
Peristalsis Wavelike contractions of the walls of an organ. Moves material through an organ and duct.
Polyp Tumor that grows on a stalk and bleeds easily
Anorexia Loss Of Appetite
Bulimia Excessive, insatiable appetite. Disorder characterized by overeating, followed by induced vomiting, diarrhea, or fasting.
