Matter

QuestionAnswer
Define matter. What are some of its properties? Something that has mass and volume. It cannot be created or destroyed.
Define mass. How do you measure it? Mass is the amount of matter in something. Measure using a balance.
Define volume. How do you measure it? Volume is the amount of space something takes up. Measure using a beaker.
Define temperature. How do you measure it? Temperature is a measure of the energy of motion of the particles in matter. Measure with a thermometer
Define density. Density is found by dividing an object's mass by its volume. A gas with less density than another will float on top.
Define liquid. A liquid is a substance that has a definite volume but does not have a definite shape. Particles in a liquid move slower than particles in a gas and they slide past each other.
Define gas. A gas is a substance that does not have a definite shape or volume. Particles move very quickly and are far apart from each other.
Define solid. A solid is a substance with a definite shape and volume. the particles are very close to each other. they don't move but they vibrate in place.
What does the CONSERVATION OF MASS say? during physical and chemical changes, matter can change appearance or identity but the total mass of matter is the same before and after the change.
What is a mixture? A mixture is a combination of 2 or more substances that keep their identities. They DO NOT undergo a chemical change. This is a PHYSICAL CHANGE.
What is a solution? A solution is a mixture that has same composition throughout. One substances dissolves in another.
When temperature increases, the speed of a chemical change _________. When temperature increases, the speed of a chemical change INCREASES.
What has a larger volume? A) 1 L of water at room temperature B) 1 L of water that started at room temperature and then has been put into the freezer for 24 hours What has a larger volume? B) 1 L of water that started at room temperature and then has been put into the freezer for 24 hours Ice or frozen water takes up more volume than liquid water
What is a chemical reaction? A chemical reaction is the process in which new substances are formed during a chemical change.
solubility the ability of a substance to dissolve in another substance
ductility the ability of a substance to be pulled into a wire
conductivity the ability of a material to allow heat or electricity to flow through it
buoyancy the ability to float
viscosity the property of a fluid that shows resistance to flow
malleability The ability of a metal to be flattened into thin sheets
magnatism a physical property produced by the motion of electric charge, resulting in attractive and repulsive forces between objects (so that some object can attract iron)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
