sonar a system that uses sound waves to measure distance and locate objects in the ocean
downwelling deep current that moves water from the surface to greater depths; brings down oxygen
tidal range the difference in height between a high tide and the next low tide
continental shelf the flat or gently sloping land that lies submerged around the edges of a continent and that extends from the shoreline out to a continental slope
density a measure of the amount of matter packed into a given volume
neap tide when the sun's gravity and the moon's gravity pull at earth from a different direction; smaller tidal bulge and tidal dip
El Nino global weather event caused by changes in wind and water movements
ocean current a mass of moving water
spring tide when the gravity of the sun and moon combine to pull Earth’s water in the same direction; extra-high tidal bulge and an extra-low tidal dip
longshore current mass of water moving parallel to the shore
salinity a measure of the amount of dissolved salt contained in water
upwelling deep current that moves water up to the surface; brings up nutrients
rip current narrow streams of water that break through sandbars and drain rapidly back to sea
tide the periodic rising and falling of the water level of the ocean
